i love todd solondz, and this is along with palindromes (with the mutant christian dance sequence) is probably my favorite film of his.
I’m not sure WHY this reminds you that college is evil, but for me (and this may make me a bad person), i would LOVE to have a writing teacher that talks to the students like that. what i can’t stand is the relentless positivity towards horrible pieces.
I could say a lot about Solondz – “Welcome to the Dollhouse” remains the only film I’ve ever walked out on – but I’ll just say that I think “Storytelling” is his masterwork. “Palindromes” had its moments (I like when they go to the dump to find aborted fetuses), but it didn’t gel for me.
What strikes me about this scene is the palpable awkwardness that I remember too well from writing classes. Everyone shifting in their seats, afraid to talk.

i didn’t really like ‘dollhouse’ all that much, either- but i didn’t like ‘pink flamingos’ either.

Well geez, Pink Flamingos is one of my all-time favorites…so I dunno. I guess we’re not a perfect match.
