Gothic Romance Paperbacks
Almost without fail, the paperbacks showed a single woman, seemingly lost or terrified, wandering or fleeing within the dark wilderness, often with a foreboding castle behind her. And always in that castle, tiny and dreamy and golden: a single, secretive lighted window.

I think the V.C. Andrews oeuvre of book covers deserves a shoutout as, perhaps, the Mannerist counterpart to the 1970s Gothic, um, Renaissance.

Absolutely, Jase. I treasure my paperback copy of “Flowers in the Attic” with the original double-cover/window thingy. Ole V.C. is in a genre by herself: gothic incest horror, maybe?
